Application Letters Guidance

If you are applying for the Internship, Education, or Tutorial Programme, or one of our scholarships or assistantships, you will need to provide additional materials in your programme application. The following advice should serve as a guideline on what to include, but we strongly encourage personal and individualised letters.

Internship Programme

Please submit a separate letter of application for your first and second choice of placement, so that if you are unsuccessful with your first choice, we can move ahead straight away with your second choice.

Your letters of application should each outline your relevant experience, your interest in the industry, and why you think you should be chosen for the placement. A good letter can make all the difference in the success of an application, as some of the placements are competitive. Please also send a résumé.

The letters and résumé will be read by ASE’s Internship Coordinator and staff at your chosen placement.

Education Programme

Your letter of application should outline any relevant experience and any education-related courses that you have already completed, and indicate what age group of children/students you would like to be placed with.

ASE’s Education Placement Coordinator and relevant staff at partnered schools will read your letter to decide which school, year group, and/or subject area to place you with.

Advanced Tutorial Programme

In order to be accepted onto the Advanced Tutorial Programme, you will need to submit the following:

  • A letter of application to the Director of Studies. Your letter should seek to persuade the Director of Studies that you understand the academic rigour of the ATP, and what you hope to gain from pursuing the tutorial option. You should also outline relevant courses or extracurricular activities that you have previously undertaken, be specific about your proposed course of study, and why you wish to concentrate upon that.

If you are a creative writer, for example, please be clear about the type of writing or genre that you wish to work in; if an English Lit, History or any other major, what exactly interests and excites you about your proposal? This information will be vital to help the DoS approve your application, and it will be used by the faculty member recruited to teach the tutorial to start developing your individual programme of study, research, and writing.

  • A sample of your work - e.g. an original essay, paper, or piece of creative writing.

  • If you are applying for a language tutorial, please also provide the contact details of a professor who can attest to your level of proficiency.

The letter of application and sample of work will be read by ASE's Director of Studies and potential tutors.

Named Scholarships

Before you apply

Check which Named Scholarship(s) you are eligible for. If you are eligible for more than one, you may apply to multiple.

Letter Requirements

Each Named Scholarship requires a separate one-to-two-page letter of application. For example:

If you are applying for an ASE Alumni Scholarship, the Mike Ruiz Scholarship, and the Don Nunes Memorial Scholarship, you should write three letters of application.

Name each application letter using your name followed by the name of the scholarship.

Finally, upload your financial aid statement alongside your letter, detailing current awards. Please indicate clearly which awards are need-based and which are merit-based.

If you are interested in applying for the Don Nunes Memorial Scholarship, please email admin@asebath.org to request further criteria and instructions.

Please note: Both your letter of application and the financial aid information provided will be shared with external donors who fund the named scholarships.

Tip

Your scholarship letters are an opportunity to let the awarding bodies know who you are, why you are applying to the programme and funding, what you hope to get out of your experience at ASE, and how the scholarship will help you achieve your goals.

Assistantships

Requirements

Each Assistantship application requires a separate letter of application.

Your one-to-two page letter of application should express your achievements and skills in the area you are applying for, as well as the reason why you’ve chosen that assistantship.

Name each application letter using your name followed by the name of the scholarship.

“Students leave ASE with a sense not only of life in the UK, but also of the specific place of Bath and the West Country in that national life.”
